What you will visit:

Paua Bay Farm
Discover the true, rural lifestyle of Paua Bay Farm, owned and operated by hosts Sue and Murray Johns. Learn the history of this extensive property that has been in the family for six generations. Explore the expansive grounds, and learn how modern-day farming has evolved since 1837 and what is involved in the care and feeding of a flock of 2,500 sheep. Marvel at a sheep shearing demonstration, and learn from a farmhand how important sheepdogs are to the daily operations on the farm. Enjoy demonstrations by the expertly trained dogs and, when invited, you too can help separate the sheep. A leisurely stroll through the garden with its mature trees and prolific birdlife is an opportunity to commune with nature.

Akaroa (independent exploration)
Nestled on the eastern shores of New Zealand's South Island, you'll be saying oh-la-la as you stroll through Akaroa. Akaroa's heritage as the only French-founded community in New Zealand is unmistakable, and this popular vacation spot proudly displays its distinctly French flair. French-named streets lead to restaurants serving French cuisine, and colonial architecture charms. Akaroa's harbor is home to a wonderful array of marine life, the area's secluded beaches, and promenades showcasing art galleries and craft shops as well as stellar views of the beautiful coastline of Banks Peninsula.

What you will see along the way

Settle in for a pleasant drive into the countryside en route to Paua Bay Farm, a typical New Zealand hill country farm. Gaze out the window at the ever-changing scenery as you travel from Lyttelton, around Lyttelton Harbour, over Gebbies Pass and onto the Canterbury Plains. From the Canterbury Plains, you'll head around Little River and will travel up to the hilltop summit to take in breathtaking views of Akaroa harbor before continuing to the destination.

Tasting:

Step inside award-winning Barrys Bay cheese factory, the last remaining cheese factory on the peninsula, and watch the activity through large viewing windows. Then enjoy locally sourced artisan cheeses produced on the premises during a cheese tasting.

Lunch:

Delight in lunch on your own in Akaroa village, where innovative chefs prepare a wide range of seasonal specialties, from fresh local fish to French favorites. The local cafés, restaurants, bistros and bars all have a unique ambience and varying price points.
