Market Hall:
With your guide, explore Market Hall, located in the old-city center of Cartagena. Here, the stalls brim with fresh fruit and vegetables as well as fresh seafood pulled from the Bay of Cadiz. This area yields some of the country's best produce, earning it the nickname 'the orchard of Europe.' As you stroll, you'll interact with the vendors, hear their stories and be treated to samples of local specialties and delicacies.
Meet Chef Solano:
Juan Solano has been the chef of Posada Jamaica restaurant, a cozy local restaurant with exceptional Spanish fare, since 2006. Trained as a young man in his parents' restaurant, Chef Solano went on to work in restaurants and hotels throughout Spain, delighting patrons with his Spanish, Italian and even Thai cuisine. His more than 35 years of experience cooking rice dishes along the Mediterranean coast has earned him the distinction as a star paella creator, having cooked over 8,000 paellas during his working career.
What you will see along the way:
Cartagena, one of the oldest cities in Spain, dates back to 223 BC. Its history is reflected in its eclectic mix of architecture. Most of the city's oldest monuments date from the days of the Roman Empire, but baroque, neoclassical and art nouveau structures are found here as well. Spanish colonial buildings and an intriguing blend of church domes, clock towers and ocean views entice visitors who stroll its colorful streets, squares and waterfront.
Snacks/Lunch:
In Market Hall, you'll stop at different stalls and taste traditional specialties of Cartagena, such as local goat cheese cured in wine and giant olives stuffed with local produce. At Posada Jamaica restaurant, meet Chef Juan Solano, who will welcome you with a glass of sangria. Enjoy watching the master at work as he prepares his signature dish, paella. Chef Solano will explain every step it takes to complete this classic Spanish meal, and once it is cooked, it's time to fill your plate and enjoy.
