Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living breathing city that has been remarkably well preserved. It provides the visitor with a fascinating glimpse of the Spanish Main and its swashbuckling days of buccaneers, conquistadors, slaves and missionaries. Protected from attack by massive walls and towering fortresses, it boasts a vibrant heritage that speaks to us today.

You'll get a taste of Cartagena's diverse history and culture on this easy half-day tour to the Caribbean School of Jewelry. Your friendly local guides will fill you in on the passing sights with expert narration and you'll arrive at the Caribbean School of Jewelry, approved by the Colombian Education Ministry, for a unique learning experience. The instructors will provide you with a work space and all the tools you need to learn how to create jewelry utilizing .925 sterling silver and emeralds. During the two and a half hour lesson, you will watch demonstrations, listen to instruction, and get hands-on experience. Learn about creating a silver ring, a pendant, a pair of earrings or a bracelet chain.

You'll also have the opportunity to watch a video about Colombian emeralds including how they are mined and carved. A rare and mysterious stone that has been sought after for centuries as a symbol of good health, truth and fidelity, Colombia has been one of the world's main sources for emeralds since the arrival of the Spanish during the 16th century. Spain's passion for gold and precious stones is well known. It is interesting to note that despite the large amounts of fine emeralds exported by the conquistadors to Spain, there are no grand examples of emerald jewelry among the Spanish crown jewels. It seems the Spanish were content to sell or trade these emeralds for gold to other empires and royalty in places such as Egypt, India and Persia. In fact the Crown Jewels of Persia (Iran) probably contain the single most exquisite collection of fine emerald jewelry in the world.

You'll learn fascinating facts like these and enjoy an ever-changing panorama of sights and sounds during your return drive to the pier. Cartagena is a lovely city, a veritable jewel of the Caribbean brimming with historic architecture, cobblestoned squares, and expansive ocean views. It will provide indelible images to be enjoyed for years to come.
