WHAT YOU VISIT
Virgen de la Candelaria
Set atop La Popa, a 492-foot-high hill, the chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of Cartagena. Built at the beginning of the 17th century and still inhabited by monks, an inside visit offers a look at the stunning 22-karat gold-leaf altar and a lovely, flower-filled courtyard.

The Old City/Walled City
Home to some of the finest examples of preserved colonial architecture in the Americas, a stroll through the 500-year-old center reveals some of Cartagena's most iconic landmarks. Among the sites stands Saint Peter Claver Church, built between 1580 and 1654 in tribute to the protector of slaves. Another point of interest is Bolivar Plaza, the main square of the city with the Cathedral on one side and the Inquisition Palace on the other.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
During your tour, you'll stop at San Felipe Fortress. As the largest Spanish colonial fortification on mainland South America, this formidable castle defended the city from many attacks and withstood the bloodiest assault from the British Admiral Vernon, who was finally unable to capture it. In order to resist attacks by pirates and rivals during the 17th century the Spanish Crown hired the services of prominent European military engineers to carry out the construction of the defenses which are one of Cartagena's unforgettable features. This construction took 208 years and resulted in seven miles of imposing walls surrounding the city, San Felipe Fortress, and the fortifications.

SNACKS
Enjoy delicious Caribbean appetizers with a contemporary touch at the Club de Pesca Restaurant. Located in a corner of the 270-year-old Pastelillo Fort, the restaurant overlooks Cartagena's marina with its many international yachts, and has an excellent view of the walled city and its bay.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
As you make your way around Cartagena, you'll no doubt notice that its architecture evokes old Spain yet its vibrant colors of blue and yellow (the colors of Colombia's flag) definitely remind you that you're on the Caribbean coast.
