View Nelson Mandela's cell while former prisoners share first-hand remembrances about conditions on the island and an overview of the anti-apartheid struggle. Also visit the quarry, where leaders of the movement were sentenced to backbreaking labor. Now operating as a living museum, Robben Island serves as a sanctuary as well for several mammal and bird species, including the African penguin.
Cape Flats and the Townships - Discover the sprawling shanty camps where non-whites were consigned to live under apartheid. This journey includes a visit to Langa, the oldest existing township in the western Cape. Local community workers host you in this now-vibrant community, where a new generation is erecting their own brick homes with the help of state grants.
