Lace up your walking shoes for a day of adventure in the beautiful, historic city of Wismar. Board a comfortable motorcoach and embark on an approximately 60-minute scenic drive to Wismar, situated on the Baltic Sea and one of the first cities established in Mecklenburg.

Wismar flourished as a trade port for centuries and was part of the former east-west trading route. It was founded by a Slavic tribe, was controlled by Sweden from 1648 to 1903, and then finally incorporated into Germany. The impact of these varying cultures throughout the ages is visible in its diverse architecture. As you approach the city, look for the impressive old church towers that can be seen from a distance. Drive into this eclectic city, shaped by merchants, guild-members, traders, and builders in the Middle Ages and disembark at the city center.

A knowledgeable guide will commence a walking tour that takes you down the cobbled streets of Wismar's old town, filled with picturesque charm. As you stroll, you'll see such noted sights as Wasserkunst, the city's medieval drainage system built following a Dutch blueprint between 1580 and 1602, which supplied drinking water until 1897. Look at the side of the well for inscriptions in both Latin and German. Pause at the City Hall for an excellent example of Hanseatic architecture. Reconstructed between 1817 and 1819, this classic landmark incorporates many original gothic pieces from the original design.

Spot the 14th-century warehouse nicknamed 'the Old Swede,' as well as a trio of churches built in the 14th century: St. Mary, with its brick Gothic edifice, St. George, with its graceful cruciform style, and St. Nicholas. Be sure to admire both sides of the 'Water Gate,' the last of five medieval city gates. Dating back to 1405, one side of the gable displays a traditional gothic style, but the other side was rebuilt in the 17th century with an entirely new design.

In the colorful marketplace, one of the largest in northern Germany, take a moment to peruse the charming assortment of shops and cafes. This is a perfect opportunity to purchase a snack, some postcards or a memento. Continue on past rows of Gothic houses, baroque buildings and Renaissance facades. Cinema buffs will be delighted to note that Wismar was the shooting location of the famous vampire film Nosferatu.

Upon arrival at the port area, stop at an imposing brick and timber building, the site of Brauhaus am Lohberg, the town's first brewery, which opened in 1452. Today, the brewing tradition continues, and the beer is brewed in huge copper vats. Step inside to a lively and nostalgic atmosphere and sample a selection of beers served with a German pretzel.

Satiated and with a camera filled with memories, reboard the motorcoach and enjoy a relaxing drive back to port.
