WHAT YOU VISIT
Waitangi Treaty Grounds
It was here on February 6, 1840 that the famous Waitangi Treaty was signed, which led to peace between the Maori and the British and is generally considered the founding document of New Zealand as a nation. Your first stop is the Meeting House. Erected in 1940, the carved structure is a spectacular example of highly-skilled Maori craftsmen. Facing the Meeting House is the Georgian-style Treaty House, one of New Zealand's oldest surviving buildings. Built in 1834 for James Busby, Britain's representative from 1833 to 1840, the house holds a small museum dedicated to the Treaty and two rooms that offer a glimpse into 19th century life. Together, the two buildings symbolize the partnership agreed between Maori and the British Crown.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
As your guide shares stories of the personalities and events that shaped New Zealand, be sure to aim your camera on the stunning scenery. And be sure to get a shot of the 114-foot-long "ngatokimatawhaorua." The world's largest ceremonial war canoe was built for the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the Treaty and is launched every year on Waitangi Day (6th February).

REFRESHMENTS
A short bushwalk leads to the Whare Waka Café for tea, coffee, cookies, water, seasonal fruit, sweet muffin, sausage rolls and biscuits served up with breathtaking views of the native bush and ocean.

SHOPPING
Purchase a few souvenirs for yourself or for family and friends back home at the gift shop inside the Waitangi Visitor Center.
