WHAT YOU VISIT
Waitangi Treaty Grounds
Hailed as the site of the 1840 signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Great Britain and the Maori, New Zealand's most sacred site is acclaimed as the "Birthplace of a Nation." Discover what impact the treaty and the English missions made on the Maori as you explore the Georgian-style Treaty House. Built in 1834, the structure is one of New Zealand's oldest surviving buildings. Marvel at the scale of the "ngatokimatawhaorua" one of the world's largest carved war canoes and enjoy a stroll through the beautiful grounds of the Waitangi estate, complete with extensive gardens, bush tracks, and beaches, and marvel at the fabulous views over the Bay of Islands and beyond.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Among the Instagram-worthy experiences is the cruise aboard a 50-foot replica of a traditional waka canoe and paddling through the tranquil waters of the Waitangi River to Haruru Falls.
LUNCH
For a true taste of Bay of Islands, look no further than an authentic Maori "hangi." This traditional barbecue is cooked underground in a deep hole, which is lined with hot stones and covered in vegetation. Meat and vegetables such as chicken, pork, lamb, potatoes, kumara (sweet potato), and other vegetables are placed on top, covered in dirt and left to steam for several hours. After the food is unearthed, you can feast on a sumptuous meal. The day's lunch includes rewena bread, potato salad with bacon, egg and chives, fresh garden salad, marinated mussels, hangi-cooked vegetables and meats and stuffing.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The five-minute walk from the pier takes you along Te Karuwha Parade Drive with views of Te Ti Bay.
