WHAT YOU VISIT
Kawiti Caves
Discovered in the early 17th century, the 656-foot-long, 65-foot-high and 39-foot-wide 12,000-year-old limestone cave system is home to thousands of glow worms and breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites. Hand-held lanterns light the way through the first 154 feet of the cave and once the lanterns are turned off the light show really begins. Across the walls and ceilings are thousands of glittering glow worms and you'll get close enough to see the actual body of the glow worm and its stunning blue-green light. Along the way, your guide will explain the glow worm's life cycle and the intricate webs used to catch their prey. (No photography or video recording is allowed inside the cave).

Kawakawa
This quaint town is known as "Train Town" for the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway that runs down the middle of its main street, and celebrated for its unique public toilets designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a former resident of the town.

Puketi Forest
Massive kauri trees once covered most of the Bay of Islands. Growing over 164 feet high these mighty giants are now protected in the 37,000-acre Puketi Forest. A guided walk along a boardwalk through the magnificent forest of hardwoods, podocarps and kauri affords you the opportunity to marvel at these imposing trees.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
During your free time in Kawakawa, be sure to focus your lens on the unusual public toilets that are designed with colorful sculptures, mosaics, copper and cobblestones!

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The 20-minute drive from the pier takes you south through a quiet countryside dotted with trees and homes.

Special Notes:

This tour involves considerable walking, wear comfortable shoes. Guests at the Kawiti Glow Worm Caves must negotiate 150 steps. Not recommended for guests with claustrophobia. Photography and video is not permitted in the glow worm grottoes.
