WHAT YOU VISIT
Butler Point Whaling Museum
Overlooking picturesque Doubtless Bay, the museum sits on Butler Point, a breathtaking heritage destination established by William Butler, a former whaling captain. Step inside and see items unique to whaling such as whale bones, harpoons, items used aboard whaling ships and an extensive scrimshaw collection. Acclaimed as one of the most comprehensive private museums of its kind in New Zealand, the privately owned 64-acre property is also the site of the Victorian home built by Butler in the 1840s. During your visit, enjoy a cup of tea while taking a peaceful and meditative stroll through the magnificent gardens, first developed by William and Eliza Butler.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The museum grounds are also home to the iconic crimson-flowered pohutukawa tree. With a trunk measuring a circumference of 32 feet, it's considered to be the world's largest.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
During the approximate one-hour drive north, it's interesting to note that the area was once a mecca for whalers. In the late 18th century whale oil was used to light lamps, to make soap and candles, detergent and wax.
