What you will visit:
Mount Desert Island
Once the home of the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and Morgans, Mount Desert Island is now a haven for nature lovers, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. Forged by retreating glaciers 18,000 years ago, Mount Desert is a testament to its icy past with verdant forests, sparkling lakes, lush wetlands and 26 sky-scraping peaks. Two-thirds of Mount Desert Island is designated as Acadia National Park. At 46,000 acres, it's one of the smallest in the U.S. but what it may lack in size it more than makes up in grandeur.
Acadia National Park/Park Loop Road
First established in 1916, Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is the oldest national park east of the Mississippi. A 47,000-acre Atlantic coastline recreation area, it is best showcased by Park Loop Road, a 27-mile stretch designated as one of America's most scenic byways.
What you will see along the way:
Your adventure begins with a leisurely drive through Bar Harbor and along the stunning coastline of Acadia, the first National Park east of the Mississippi. Take in sweeping views of rugged shoreline, evergreen forests of spruce and pine, and mountain summits. Travel down a portion of the Park's 27-mile Park Loop Road past Thunder Hole and other highlights.
Photo Opportunity:
Thunder Hole
Under the right tidal conditions, ocean swells converge with a thunderous roar against the granite coastline at dramatic Thunder Hole. If the tides are favorable, you will see the ocean spray shooting high into the air.
Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse
Built in the 1850's, Bass Harbor Light is the only lighthouse on Mount Desert Island. One of the most recognizable and photographed lighthouses in North America, Bass Harbor Light has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988.
Northeast Harbor
Long time summer residence of the rich and famous families including the likes of the Rockefellers and the Clarks. Northeast Harbor features a picturesque harbor and several quaint shops and cafes. Explore this little village and take some time to take in the relaxing atmosphere.
Southwest Harbor
Often called "the jewel" of Mount Desert Island, this coastal gem boasts tree-lined streets, a sparkling bay filled with lobster boats and yachts, and a quaint downtown area brimming with shops, cafés and galleries. Enjoy a pleasant stroll and a little souvenir shopping.
Special Notes:
There is no visit to Cadillac Mountain (travel loop road only), photo stops are made based on the parking availability along the Park Loop Road and may include Thunder Hole, Sieur de Mont Springs, Schooner Head, Otter Cove, or the Jordan Pond area.
