Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Board your motorcoach at the pier and enjoy a scenic drive to fascinating Bangkok. Travel through a tropical countryside with picturesque views of tapioca fields and small rural towns.

Your drop-off point in Bangkok provides easy access to taxis, river cruises, shopping and restaurants. Enjoy ample free time for independent sightseeing and shopping. The local currency is the Thai Baht and it is required for entrance fees to most venues. Currency exchange is available in the city at major hotels and numerous local banks and authorized dealers.

You might choose to visit the Temple of the Golden Buddha, home to a famous statue of the Buddha carved from solid gold in the Sukothai style. The Buddha was covered in plaster to protect it from invading armies in the 18th century and was then "rediscovered" in 1957 when the statue was being moved by a crane. It slipped off and landed in the mud, only to be found by a workman. Through a small crack in the plaster, he saw a sliver of gold.

Probably the most famous place in Thailand to visit is Wat Phra Kaeo, the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha. Located on the grounds of the Bangkok Grand Palace, at the heart of the monastery is a Buddha carved from a single piece of emerald-green jasper, perched atop a gilded pedestal. The Emerald Buddha wears a seasonal costume that is changed throughout the year to reflect the seasons. In the summer months it wears a crown and jewelry, in the winter it is wrapped in a gold shawl, and in the rainy months it can be seen in a headdress and gilt robe. The Thai king, in a ritual ceremony that ushers in the new season and celebrates good fortune, changes the costumes.

Located in the same area is the Grand Palace and you can take a walking tour through its ornate and elaborate courtyards. The city's most spectacular landmark, the palace complex, once the residence of the Kings of Thailand, is now reserved for royal ceremonies and state occasions. Beautifully situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the palace's major buildings, although designed in the European style, are crowned with glittering spires richly decorated with gilt and colored-glass mosaics.

A short walk from the Grand Palace brings you to the Chao Phraya River, where you can escape the city streets on a riverboat cruise. Travel past Wat Arun, known as the Temple of the Dawn, which once served as the Royal Chapel. You may also see the Phra Prang, a 260-foot high pagoda decorated with ceramic tiles and fragments of multi-colored porcelain.

Shopping opportunities abound and you will find everything from precious gems to colorful silk and antiques. And when you've worked up an appetite, there are numerous authentic Thai restaurants as well as an array of international cuisines to choose from.

At the end of your day, meet the motorcoach at the designated time and place and enjoy a relaxing journey back to port.
