WHAT YOU VISIT
Sukayu Hot Spring Onsen
Dating back to 1684, Sukayu Onsen is known as one of the most prominent hot springs resorts in Japan. Resting on the western side of Mt. Hakkoda, the communal bath, known as "senjin-buro" (bath of a 1,000 people) is so spacious it could accommodate a 1,000 bathers at once. Be aware that nudity is not an option (wearing a bathing suit is not allowed) and there are certain guidelines that must be followed: Before entering the bath you need to step into the shower and rinse off; do not use soap in the bath and don't put your towel in the water. And, above all, since a hot spring is considered a "communal bath" meant for relaxing, be careful not to splash or play around in the water.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Photos are not allowed inside the onsen but the surrounding landscape offers plenty of photo subjects-Mt. Hakkoda and Jogakura Gorge are all ready for their closeup.
LUNCH
Sit down for a traditional lunch inside the "ryokan," a traditional Japanese inn at the Sukayu Hot Spring premises.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Your day begins at the pier when you climb aboard a motorcoach and venture into the volcanic Hakkoda Mountain range. Cross the Jogakura-Ohashi Bridge. Completed in 1995, it is the longest steel arch bridge in Japan at 825 feet long and 400 feet high. Take in excellent views as you approach the mountainous Sukayu Hot Spring area.
