WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Tsugaru Kanayama Kiln
Tsugaru Kanayama is an unglazed pottery that was heavily influenced by the blue-gray beauty of Sue pottery. High-quality clay is gathered from the bottom of the Kanayama Otameike pond and fired at extremely high temperatures using Japanese red pine. Unique firing techniques, including the application of straw bindings, the placement of plates on the pottery to create patterns, and burying pieces in ash away from direct exposure to the fire, create exquisite pieces of art. A local expert brings this unique process to life.

Tachineputa no Yakata Pavilion
Goshogawara is home to one of the largest summer "matsuri," or festivals, in the Tsugaru region, and the "dashi" are the undisputed stars of the show. Weighing almost 17 tons, these remarkable floats can reach 70 feet in height and are constructed from hand-assembled frames and elaborately painted washi paper. Three stunning examples of the dashi are on display at the Tachineputa no Yakata Pavilion, where a local expert will take you through the process behind creating these elegant behemoths in the on-site production studio.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
Travel through the scenic countryside to the city of Goshogawara and your first stop, under the quiet shadow of Mount Bonju. The city is divided into two unconnected areas, the northernmost of which is bordered by the Sea of Japan and lies on the banks of Lake Jusanko. Parts of the southern section lie within the limits of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park, with the waters of the Iwaki River flowing through the city.

Special Notes:

Drive between pier and Goshogawara city is approximately 75 minutes each way. Some part of walking at Kanayama Kiln is over uneven, bare ground, and a few stairs are required.
Japanese yen are required for additional purchases.
Tour order may vary.
