WHAT YOU VISIT
Perched atop a small hill overlooking a sparkling fjord, the museum boasts Northern Europe's largest and richest rock carving site, inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. A well-marked walkway is dotted with stopping points that give you an up-close look at some of the thousands of rock carvings and rock paintings created between 6,200 and 2,500 years ago by the ancient residents of this place. A walk inside the museum reveals additional information and examples of the ancient rock carvings, plus exhibits about the Northern Lights, Alta's slate industry, the Sami religion, the Bossekop trading market and salmon fishing in the Alta River.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Once in Alta, your drive will take you past the city's highlights, allowing for photo opportunities from the comfort of your seat. Have your camera ready while strolling through the Alta Museum's open-air exhibits in the summer, or the museum itself in winter. Look closely at the examples of the rock carvings and try to guess the meanings of the symbols that you see: boats and fish, hunters and shamans, moose, reindeer, bears, birds and fertility symbols.

SNACK
Treat yourself to a cup of coffee or tea and a snack while enjoying the panoramic views that surround the Alta Museum.

SHOPPING
Enjoy free time to shop for souvenirs while visiting the Alta Museum. The Gift Shop offers a selection of locally produced items from Alta, Finnmark, Northern Norway and Sápmi such as books, jewelry, knives, glass art, food and clothes.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The largest city in the county of Finnmark. Between the rough and vast mountain plateau and the sparking expanse of the fjord, Alta offers tree-clad valleys and rugged hillsides. Once you enter the city, you'll travel through the neighborhood of Bossekop, where Dutch whalers settled in the 17th century; Elvebakken, in the east, is home to the airport and harbor, and central Alta offers pedestrian shopping precincts and shopping centers

Special Notes:

In summer, there is a 1.5km guided walk to view the Petroglyphs with a gentle incline. The rock carvings outdoors are covered with snow in the winter, typically from November to April. The carvings may or may not be available in October and May, depending on the weather.
