WHAT YOU VISIT
Paeskatun Slate Quarry
Located about ten miles from Alta's city center, the Pæskatun slate quarry represents a long and important tradition in the economic life in Alta. A tour of its production hall followed by a demonstration of old and new techniques offers a look into the rough and difficult trade that has been a cornerstone of the Alta economy for two centuries. Today, Paeskatun slate is used for furniture, monuments, signs, giftware, and other products.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
From Pæskatun, you'll have fantastic views over the Alta Valley, all the way to the fjord.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Now the largest city in the county of Finnmark, the village of Alta was established officially elevated to "city" status in 2000. Balanced between the rough, vast mountain plateau in the interior and Norway's wet and stormy coast, Alta offers tree-clad valleys, milder weather and delightful views of the not-so-distant wilderness. Once you enter the city, you'll travel through the neighborhood of Bossekop, where Dutch whalers settled in the 17th century; Elvebakken, in the east, settled in the 1700s by refugees from Finland and now home to the airport and harbor, and central Alta with its pedestrian shopping centers. You will also drive past "Skiferkaia", the dock at the fjord where slate has been loaded onto ships for export since the 1800s.

Special Notes:

The ground at Paeskatun is mostly gravel and uneven in places. Buildings on the site have thresholds at the doors.
