Main port photo for Nosy Be, Madagascar

This small island lies off the northwest coast of Madagascar. Close by the East African coast, the large island of Madagascar offers a warm climate, mountains cloaked with lush tropical forests, and volcanic lakes. Indonesians settled here as early as the 6th century, and parts of the island retain a strong Asian flavor. Bantu tribes from the mainland arrived in the 9th century, transforming Madagascar into a major trading center. The tribes consolidated their political power, which lasted until the French overthrew the Merina dynasty in 1896. In 1960, the Malagasy people regained their independence.
