Tour Overview

To get a unique and authentic understanding of New Zealand look no further than the "Te Papa Tongarewa," which means "the place of treasures of this land." Just 30 minutes away from the pier, you'll travel along Wellington's scenic ocean - view streets in your air-conditioned motor coach and disembark at the museum.

Experience an in-depth guided tour of Te Papa's collection highlights for an overview of what makes New Zealand unique. Discover this vibrant land and its diverse natural environment from the kiwi bird to the kauri tree, you will see a variety of New Zealand's animal and plant life. Discover the world of Māori, the tangata whenua (first people) of New Zealand. Stories of voyaging, conflict, and survival are told though a powerful mix of cultural treasures, oral histories, and contemporary works. Step inside the body of Te Hau ki Turanga, one of the oldest and most significant meeting houses in existence, and visit our dynamic and beautiful marae (communal meeting place) for the 21st century, designed and created by leading Māori carvers. Learn about New Zealand art, and see highlights from New Zealand's national art collection - European and Māori, historical and contemporary. From the spirit of its dynamic culture, stories of colonial history to the present day, this tour will provide insight into New Zealand and the spirit of its people.

Then, enjoy some free time to visit the gift shop before boarding your motor coach and driving to Lambton Quay in the central business district, home of the 111-year-old Wellington Cable Car. You'll have a vertical climb in this funicular of over 390 feet in the air and travel a length of 2,000 feet; three minutes later, you're at the top and overlooking the city.

From this commanding location, you have a ringside seat to some of Wellington's most breathtaking views including the city's rolling hills, the downtown area, Te Whanganui-a-Tara (the Mâori name for the Wellington Harbour, also known as the great Harbour of Tara) and beyond.

Time permitting, pop into the Cable Car Museum which is housed within the original Winding House. The museum is home to two of the original grip cars and the historic winding machinery once used to haul the cars through a series of tunnels up the steep incline.

Your tour concludes with another scenic drive back to your ship.
