Tour Overview

Experience Tambo Colorado, a beautifully preserved Inca fortress constructed around 1440 AD. Situated between the Pacific coast and the Andes Mountains of southern Peru, the decorated surfaces and structural elements have survived for centuries making it easy to imagine what life was like during the height of the Inca Empire.

Walk in the footsteps of the high priest as you view his bed chambers, dressing rooms and sacrificial altar. See the silos and barracks used to house Incan soldiers. Explore the large, rectangular complex arranged around a central trapezoidal plaza and learn the significance of the name Tambo Colorado as you study the bands of color that adorn the outer walls.

With an expert guide providing thought-provoking insight along the way, you'll explore the main plaza, a wide platform which functioned as the throne for the Inca ruler. And you'll view structural elements up close, admiring the intricate lattice work, single and double-framed niches, ornamental crests, and corbelled arches that reveal Inca artistry.

You'll feel as though you've been transported back in time. Before the Spanish conquest of Peru, the Inca reigned supreme over an empire stretching from the modern Ecuador-Colombia border to the Rio Maule in Chile, and from the Pacific Coast to the Argentinian Pampas. Visiting this amazing complex is a heady experience you won't soon forget.

And this moderate half-day tour also takes you through the epic Pisco Valley, home of the Nazca Lines and other mysterious, still unexplained archaeological sites. Your scenic narrated drive reveals an ever-changing tableau with great contrasts in terrain and vegetation morphing from arid desert dunes to verdant farmlands dotted with small villages.

The area surrounding the Pisco River is some of the driest on earth, but farmers still utilize elaborate, centuries-old irrigation techniques to raise fields of corn, asparagus and cotton. The valley is also home to endless vineyards and yes, the grapes are used to make the delicious Pisco brandy.

Back at your ship in the harbor, gaze out over the bustling port of San Martin. Named after the liberator General San Martin, the port transports goods and produce to and from the neighboring countries of Bolivia and Argentina.
