Tour Overview

This three-hour excursion includes an easy, 60-minute walking tour so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat. After boarding your air-conditioned motorcoach you're just minutes away from Marewa, a tiny suburb that proudly illustrates that Napier's homes of the 1930's and 1940's also used simple and modern geometrical designs. Along the way, your guide will explain the art and architecture of the Art Deco period and point out the must-see attractions. Named the 'Art Deco City', Napier was redesigned in the Art Deco style after a devastating earthquake destroyed the city in 1931. Your driving tour ends at the Art Deco Trust building and your walking tour begins. Some of the architectural gems you'll see include the Municipal Theatre, the former Hotel Central and the Masonic Hotel, among others. After your tour, stop by The Art Deco Shop for books, clothing, figurines, lamps, DVDs and posters.
