Tour Overview

When you're in the tranquil Elqui Valley you can't help but be enthralled by the region's rolling vineyards and dramatic mountain backdrop. With vines as far as the eye can see, many of which are cultivated for the production of Chile's most famous spirit, there's nothing more appealing than a tour and tasting at a local Pisco distillery. And that's just what this moderate full-day excursion has to offer with a nod to the Elqui Valley's cultural geography. Home to great poets, including the famed Nobel Laureate, Gabriela Mistral, and a mecca for esoteric groups and star gazers, this remarkable region will keep you continually charmed.

Your adventure begins in Coquimbo, the source of pirate legends and hidden treasures. Enjoy the colorful narration of your expert guide as you pass by the seaside resorts of Peñuelas listening to colorful tales of Henry Drake, the English privateer.

Following the "route of the grapes" into the Elqui Valley, you'll stop at one of the area's most renowned Pisco distilleries. You'll hear tales of the Spanish conquistadores who brought grape vines to South America for their own consumption and export. And you'll see how the potent brandy made from distilled grape juice continues to attract fans from around the world.

While you're in Vicuna, your tour will also take you to the impressive Mistral Monument commemorating the lifework of Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral surrounded by the landmark sights of the Bauer Tower, Inmaculada Concepcion Church and Main Square.

With lunch served at a local restaurant and the scenic drive back through the Elqui Valley to the important port city of Coquimbo, you'll discover a kaleidoscope of enticing colors and shapes, aromas and tastes that bring the history and culture of this extraordinary region to life.

Shopping for Chilean souvenirs is an activity not to be missed: especially when you can treasure hunt for alpaca woolens from Peru and Bolivia, local Diaguita-inspired ceramics, and lapis lazuli. Browse La Recova Market amidst the colorful wares of over 140 artisan stalls and the color and charm of two central plazas.
