Tour Overview

Begin your day by traveling via motorcoach to the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad depot to board your train for a spectacular 67-mile trip on Alaska's historic railway en route to Fraser, British Columbia and then on to beautiful Bennett Lake.

The White Pass & Yukon Route is unlike any other railroad. Against all odds, the iron trail was carved through some of the North's most rugged terrain in 1898. Built during the Klondike Gold Rush, this engineering wonder is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, an honor shared with the Eiffel Tower, the Panama Canal and the Statue of Liberty. Considered an impossible feat, the railway was completed in 26 months by literally blasting through the mountains with 450 tons of explosives. The 110-mile railroad was completed when a final golden spike was hammered into place on July 29, 1900 in Carcross, Yukon.

Onboard, you'll climb nearly 3,000 feet over 20 miles of steep grades and cliff-hanging turns. Relax in vintage railcars as your train agent retraces the original route to the White Pass Summit, passing Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch. Enjoy a breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles and historic sites. See the original Klondike Trail of '98 worn into the rocks, a permanent tribute to the thousands of souls who passed this way in search of fortune.

Accessible only by train, Bennett, British Columbia is an abandoned town next to scenic Bennett Lake. Constructed during the gold rush and located at the end of the White Pass and Chilkoot trails, it was a vital stop for prospectors. After carrying supplies over the Coast Mountains via the trails, the stampeders stopped here to build or purchase rafts before the trip across the lake and down the Yukon River to the gold fields.

As your train arrives into Bennett, you will journey back in time upon entering the White Pass & Yukon Route historic depot museum, chronicling the transportation history of the North. Step back into history of the onetime bustling banks of Lake Bennett, where stampeders crafted their vessels to continue north onto the gold fields. Take the time to walk up to the church on the hill, one of the only remaining structures in this beautiful location.

After time at Bennett and the White Pass museum, re-board the train where you will enjoy a hearty lunch as you travel the shores of beautiful Lake Bennett. Upon arrival in Carcross, you will have the opportunity to explore this Native village, idyllically situated beside Lake Bennett, once known as Caribou Crossing.

Meet your motorcoach in Carcross and travel along the historic Klondike Highway on your return to Skagway. Along the way, your driver-guide thrills you with stories of stampeders as you trace their footsteps along Brackett's Wagon Road, Pitchfork Falls, Dead Horse Gulch and the infamous Tormented Valley.
