With its Mediterranean climate, limestone soil, low rainfall and abundant sunshine, Jumilla is an ideal location for growing Monastrell, the local grape variety (known as Mourvèdre or Mataro outside Spain). While wine making dates to the Greeks, it wasn't until 1966 that Jumilla was recognized as a Designation of Origin.
