Cosmopolitan culture in Buenos Aires
South American cruise destinations
Buenos Aires, the cosmopolitan capital of Argentina, offers travelers on a South American cruise a great sense of history, fun and flavor unlike that found in any other destination in the world.
One of the most historic places you can visit during your shore excursion is the Recoleta Cemetery. Located in one of the city's most exclusive neighborhoods, this attraction features more than 6,400 unique mausoleums - including the one that holds the remains of Eva Peron, the legendary first lady who has become an enduring cultural icon. Another great destination that has played a role in Argentine history is the Plaza de Mayo. Together with its Casa Rosado, this central square has been a pivotal place for the country's politics dating back to its independence in 1810.
If you're an aficionado of culture, Buenos Aires has plenty to offer. At the National Museum of Fine Arts, you can see a wide array of gorgeous paintings, sculptures and more. Meanwhile, the iconic Colon Theatre hosts some of the country's best musical and operatic performances. For a more laid-back cultural experience, head to the district of La Boca. This neighborhood is known for its colorful houses, European-style atmosphere and vibrant art scene. Even better, it is a great place to learn the tango, the national dance of Argentina.
Although Buenos Aires is a hub of urban culture in Argentina, it is also a great place for those looking for a more rustic experience. At the city's many estancias, or large rural estates, you can watch gauchos ride horses, herd cattle and cook some asado meat. Meanwhile, the nearby Tigre Delta is a collection of river islands where many residents of Buenos Aires escape from city life during the weekends.
