Explore all that Rio de Janeiro has to offer
South American cruise destinations
Rio de Janeiro is one of South America's liveliest cities, and you can experience all that this vibrant metropolis has to offer if you stop by during a Brazilian cruise.
Rio constantly hums with energy, as more than 9 million people live in the city and its surrounding suburbs. Residents of the city are known as Cariocas, and they are sure to welcome you with open arms as you explore their amazing home.
When you first arrive in Rio de Janeiro, you will want to visit Sugarloaf Mountain. This peak earned its name because of its conical shape, which reminded early settlers of the blocks of sugar produced at plantations during Brazil's colonial era. Take a cable car to the top, where you can marvel at some truly spectacular views of Rio, its sparkling beaches and the verdant mountains that surround it.
Another iconic Rio attraction is the statue of Christ the Redeemer, also known as Cristo Redentor. Perched atop Corcovado Mountain, the tallest peak in the city, this 125-foot concrete monument depicts Jesus with his arms wide open - an appropriate symbol of such a warm and inviting city.
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, why not take a trip to Petropolis? This 19th-century mountain retreat was the home of Brazil's last emperor, and you can see his imperial jewels on a tour of the royal palace. For a different kind of relaxation, you can spread out on one of the city's beaches. In particular, attractions like Copacabana and Ipanema are known for their shimmering white sand, glimmering blue water and swaying palm trees.
