History buffs will love Aarhus, Denmark
European Cruise Destinations
One of the best parts of travel is visiting places that might not get a lot of attention, and Aarhus, Denmark, certainly fits the bill. If you have a chance to visit this wonderful city, the second largest in Denmark, during your European cruise, be sure to take full advantage of the many things to do there.
If you're a history buff, you'll likely be a big fan of your time in Aarhus. Most European cities have an "old town," where the buildings are preserved to reflect a bygone era. In Aarhus, the city's old town is actually an open-air museum, allowing travelers to really see what it would have been like to live in the 15th century. Your tour guide will navigate the cobblestone streets while you get the chance to view more than 75 buildings. Nearly every structure has something to offer, whether its an old carpenter's workshop or a merchant's home stuffed with antiques.
Go back even further into history with a visit to Fyrkat Viking Fortress. Like many settlements in Denmark, Aarhus was originally founded by the Vikings, and you'll be able to learn all about their fascinating culture on a trip to Fyrkat, just outside the city. This massive fortification was one of five built by the famous Viking King Harald Bluetooth. Be sure to pay attention to your tour guide as he details the famed leader's various exploits and those of his clan.
History even creeps into the the shore excursions focused on natural beauty. Board an old steam engine for your trip through Denmark's Lake Country, offering sweeping postcard-ready vistas. After disembarking from the train, you'll have the chance to visit Marselisborg, which currently serves as the summer palace for the Danish Royal Family.
