See Rome in a day
European Cruise Destinations
Rome wasn't built in a day - but you'll have the chance to see it in one if your European cruise stops in the port of Civitavecchia, Italy.
Civitavecchia is a small seaport on the coast of Italy that has served as the entryway to Rome for hundreds of years. After disembarking in the small town, you'll board a coach for your tour of the Eternal City.
Rome is massive and can sometimes be overwhelming. Realistically, it's nearly impossible to see everything in just one day. Yet if you prioritize, you'll be able to check out many of the highlights that have made the city famous.
The magnificent Colosseum will be at the top of many travelers' lists, and with good reason. This awe-inspiring structure has stood since ancient times, and the legends surrounding the gladiatorial contests that took place here are infamous. Sadly, the historic arena hasn't been as well-preserved as many of Rome's other landmarks, and city officials have come under fire for letting the structure deteriorate. Fortunately, tours are still open for the area, and you'll be able to see the magnificent sights from the inside as a tour guide explains all about this one-of-a-kind landmark.
On the other hand, Rome's Pantheon is an example of an attraction that has been perfectly preserved. This magnificent building is still impressive thousands of years later, and the epic rotunda is sure to leave you wowed.
Some of Rome's best sights are actually located inside another country - Vatican City. Making your way to the Vatican is likely an all-day affair, but it's well worth it. The Vatican Museums hold some of the most famous pieces of art in existence. See the inside of St. Peter's Basilica and marvel at the massive amount of people who come to the square every day. When you tour the Sistine Chapel and look up at Michaelangelo's masterpiece, you'll know you made the right decision to come to Rome.
