Architecture and history in Helsinki, Finland
European Cruise Destinations
For European cruises that will be stopping in Scandinavia, one of the highlights of the journey will undoubtedly be Helsinki, Finland. This vibrant and modern city offers history, culture and even a few surprises.
One of those surprises will probably be Suomenlinna Fortress. Here, you'll learn all about the history of the fort, sure, but you'll also have the chance to see how the operation continues to run to this day. Sprawled out over six islands, this is really a city within a city, as Suomenlinna features its own school, library, fire department and even beer gardens.
Back in Helsinki proper, you'll have the chance to take in all the famous sites that the city has to offer. Passengers interested in architecture should head straight for Senate Square, as the four main buildings there were all designed by renowned architect Carl Ludvig Engel. If you're a history buff, you might enjoy a short trip to the old-fashioned town of Porvoo, which features beautifully preserved buildings that date back to the 1300s.
