Pointe des Galets, Reunion Island
Pointe des Galets is the principal port on 980-square-mile Reunion Island, marooned in the southern Indian Ocean, south-west of Mauritius. It is a lushly vegetated isle covered in palms, casuarinas, screw pines, tropical fruits, flowers, sugarcane and spices. Reunion, with its active volcano and botanic diversity, is often likened to Hawaii.
French Culture
A Creole-tinged French culture adds sophistication to Pointe Des Galets. Sit in one of its cafes and enjoy the Paris-goes-tropical ambience.
West Coast
For a small island, 207 kilometres around, Reunion has a broad variety of landscapes, accessible via well-maintained roads and trails. Drive down its west coast, popular with surfers, then weave your way up to the three deep, mountainous pits, or ‘cirques’, that sit in the island’s heart.
Piton des Neiges (Snow Peak)
Tour the volcanic ranges for extraordinary views of the rainforest and Reunion’s highest peak, Piton des Neiges, jutting 3069 metres into the air.
