Mystery Island, Vanuatu
This small, uninhabited island just off volcanic Tanna is one of the most southernmost of the Vanuatu group. Used as a World War II landing strip for the allied forces, it is completely undeveloped. Amble around the island, or, if you’re handy with a snorkel and fins, explore the surrounding reefs.
Shopping
Locals from nearby islands ferry across to sell various trinkets. Shopping here is simple, Melanesian stallholders aren’t inclined to haggle, so prices for everything from sarongs and floral shirts to grass skirts and locally-crafted souvenirs are cheap but constant. Browse the stalls for souvenirs, get your hair braided, chat with the affable locals or lounge on the sand and allow yourself to be lulled by laidback island music.
