Port Arthur, Australia
Port Arthur is a former penal settlement occupying the tip of the Tasman Peninsula, 60 kilometres south of Tasmania’s capital - Hobart, one of Australia's most significant heritage sites.
Historical Ruins
Its ruins, which housed 12,500 convicts between 1837 and 1877 in harsh conditions, can be viewed today on a guided or self-guided tour. The site has more than 30 buildings, ruins and restored period homes including a museum, a convict study centre and an interpretation gallery, set on 40 landscaped hectares.
Isle of the Dead
Cruise to the Isle of the Dead and join a guided tour of Port Arthur’s island burial ground, or take a trip to Point Puer Boys Prison, the first reformatory in the British Empire built just for male juvenile convicts. Infamous for its harsh regime, you can still view the remains of structures built by the boys in bushland environs virtually unaltered since the 19th century.
