Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani Fort
Located in Qasr Al Alam Street, these forts were built as prisons in 1580 during the Portuguese occupation. They have now been converted into museums.
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
This spectacular mosque is the third largest in the world, and is open to visitors from 8am to 11am every day except Friday. Highlights of the mosque include a stunning Swarovski crystal chandelier, the second largest hand-made Persian carpet in the world and spectacular marble panelling. Ladies are expected to keep their heads, ankles and wrists covered whilst visiting the mosque.
Mutrah Souk
Browse for jewellery, traditional handicrafts and local food at this maze-like souk (marketplace), described as the best in the Gulf region. The souk also includes a fish market.
