Salaverry (Trujillo), Peru

Salaverry is the gateway to Peru and the port for Trujillo, the second largest city in Peru. Located on the northern coast, Trijillo has numerous archaeological sites and it has managed to retain much of its colonial flavor. Like its bigger sister Lima, Trujillo was also founded by the Spanish conquistador Pizarro. For those who have an interest in colonial architecture and design or archeology, the city of Trujillo and beyond holds many highlights.

Chimu Ruins

Near Trujillo lies the ancient Chimu capital of Chan Chan. The Chimu, who were later conquered by the Incas, built Chan Chan about 1300 A.D. It is the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas and the largest mud city in the world.

Mochicas Temples

The Mochicas built these two pyramids over 700 years before the Chimu civilization and Chan Chan. The Huacas del Sol y de la Luna contains more than 50 million adobe bricks, and the Huaca del Sol is the largest mud structure on the continent.
