San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
Nicaragua is the largest Central American nation and has stunning landscapes, vast cultural treasures, and an intriguing history. Located on the Pacific coast of Southern Nicaragua is a scenic fishing village named San Juan del Sur. Its bay possesses beautiful white-sand beaches and ecological richness. The nearby city of Granada is the oldest city in Central America. Founded on the shores of the "Great Lake," it has become a thriving port and community set amid an astonishing landscape.
Until recent times Nicaragua was known for its civil war (Sandinistas and Contras) that raged from the late 70s through much of the 80s. Today, the soldiers and guerrillas have been replaced with tour guides eager to show you their beautiful country. From touring the capital of Managua, to strolling the cobblestone streets of colonial Granada on Lake Nicaragua, to exploring one of the many volcanoes, Nicaragua has something for even the most seasoned traveler.
Granada
Granada is Nicaragua's oldest colonial city and was founded in 1524 by conquistadors. It lies on the shore of Lake Nicaragua and has always been a main trade center. Today, the town is a literary center with many colorful colonial buildings and monuments.
Lake Nicaragua
This lake is the second largest lake in Latin America after Lake Titicaca. So vast, from one shore, one cannot see the other side. And, the lake has everything it needs to be a sea: waves, archipelagos of islands and the only fresh water sharks in the world.
