Corsica (Propriano), France
Corsica is an island that has switched hands many times throughout its turbulent history. Today it belongs to the French, yet the Corsicans maintain a pride and culture that is distinctly their own. The island's geography remains wild, rugged and beautiful, and the people have not lost their old-world traditions.
Propriano
This little port was exploited by the ancient Greeks and Romans then deserted due to its easy target for pirates. It was only during the early 20th century that Propriano started to be redeveloped. Now it's a big tourist draw as throngs of people head to the area's beaches.
Campomoro
This small seaside village at the southern end of the Gulf of Valinco features a mile-long beach guarded by a fortified tower erected by Genoa in the 16th century.
Filitosa
Northwest of Propriano, prehistoric statues with faces or full figures armed with weapons and ranging in height from six to nine feet tall were discovered in 1946. This site also contains circular structures by the Torréens, a seafaring people who invaded Corsica in about 110 BC.
