Ny Ålesund, Spitsbergen
The tiny outpost of Ny Ålesund is the northernmost settlement in the world. This remote island in the Spitsbergen archipelago of Svalbard (Norway) is located on the south shore of the Arctic Ocean, and serves primarily as a place for scientific research, yet filled with natural wonders.
Arctic Frontier
The stark beauty of this untouched wilderness is breathtaking. Nature reigns in this land of grand scale -- massive glaciers, towering granite mountains and giant ice floes. Wildlife is held in the highest regard, and you'll see polar bears, puffins and other creatures undisturbed in their habitat.
Amundsen Memorial
Explorer and author Ronald Amundsen was the first man to reach the South Pole, and later, crossed the North Pole, along with American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth and the Italian explorer and engineer Umberto Nobile.
Historic Mining Community
Just about the only remains left of this Norwegian coal mine are an old building and small locomotive that transferred coal to the docks.
