Nosy Be, Madagascar
A volcanic island just off the coast of north-west Madagascar, Nosy Be is ringed by deserted beaches, broken up by the odd fishing village. The harbor town of Hellville is the departure point for cruises to nearby islands and dive sites. It offers lively markets, bars and cafes.
The Islands
Several smaller islands, accessible via speedboat or day cruise, float in the adjacent ocean. The extensive, largely unexplored barrier reefs shelter an abundance of marine life including sea turtles.
Nosy Komba - Isle of the Lemurs
Nosy Ambariovato is nicknamed Nosy Komba after the island's lemurs. The natives regard the small primates or ‘komba’ as sacred. Walk along the beach and through the village, keeping an eye overhead to spot lemurs in the trees.
Markets and Shopping
Shoppers will find plenty to barter for; locally made crafts, clothing, embroidered napery, jewelry and souvenirs are sold out of thatched-roof stores in the capital.
