Cochin, India
Located on the Kerala coast, Cochin has been a major seaport and trading center since before the days of the Roman Empire. Here, cultures from three continents met in trade, and this legacy is seen in the city's rich heritage. Cochin boasts a Portuguese church, a Dutch palace, an exquisite Synagogue, Chinese-style fishing nets, English Tudor-style mansions and old warehouses still bursting with spices and coir. Cochin is also your southern gateway to greater India.
Fort Cochin
The Portuguese built a fort on this site as part of their pursuit of the fabled spice trade of the Indies. Today, the site is marked by the oldest European settlement in India -- the fort structures themselves have disappeared over time.
Indo-Portuguese Museum
Exhibits consist of paintings, gilded wood sculptures and silverware that are part of the rich Portuguese heritage of Cochin.
Jewish Synagogue
Built by Sephardic Jews in the mid-1500s, the graceful Synagogue features hand-painted Cantonese floor tiles and exquisite copper plaques.
