Tour Overview
Departing from Muroran, you'll board your comfortable motorcoach for a scenic journey passing dense forests, rolling countryside, and the city of Tomakomai, famed for paper production. It's a journey back in time as you head to the Historical Village.
Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and the fifth largest city in Japan in terms of population. The city is best known as host of the 1972 Olympic Winter Games and the city's name is synonymous with the Sapporo Beer brand. The city's name is derived from language of the Ainu, the indigeneous people of Hokkaido. Possible derivatives include "Sari-Poro-Pet" (River lined with large reed bed) or "Sat-Poro-Pet" (Large dried-up river). The city was established in 1922.
The Historical Village is a large outdoor museum with about 53 old wooden and stone buildings from the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods. The buildings were painstakingly dismantled and relocated into 4 different zones within the village: "Town", "Fishing Village", "Farm Village" and "Mountain Village." Inside each building are displays showing how Hokkaido residents of the period lived in each of these different areas. You'll have time to explore the various zones, as well as see folkloric art demonstrations and performances.
After your visit, your motorcoach will take you back to the city for the second half of your adventure, stopping along the way for a delicious Western style lunch.
Your travels will take you to the heart of the city that came to international fame as the host city for the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first ever held in Asia. You'll stop at Odori Park, truly the city's "central park" that divides it into North and South. Originally designated as the main street, it eventually became a park spanning 13 blocks. Explore its underground shopping town, or stroll within its lush terrestrial beautiful park. Throughout the year, many events and ceremonies are held here, such as the Sapporo Lilac Festival and the Sapporo Snow Festival that attracts millions of visitors each year. Climb the TV tower located at the East end for some spectacular city views from its observation deck.
Your day of adventure comes to an end as you re-board your motorcoach for the scenic ride back through the city to Muroran and your ship.
