Get your walking shoes on, as you prepare to explore this glorious landscape - and hopefully encounter a bear or two along the way.
The fun starts when you board your bus for a picturesque journey through the Tlingit village of Hoonah, en route to the bush country of the Spasski River Valley. Your expert guide will be on hand to provide details about the history and culture of Alaska's largest Tlingit settlement, which is now home to 870 residents. Notice how few roads are paved, and also the lack of stoplights in this charming village.
Once you've arrived at Spasski River Valley, you will learn about the local flora and fauna on a short hike along gravel and boardwalk-lined paths, through the temperate rainforest, to arrive at the viewing platforms overlooking the river. Here you may be lucky enough to view the magnificent brown (grizzly) bears, who flock here when the salmon are running and the meadows are alive with plump, juicy berries and new growth plants. Aside from the bears, you will also be encouraged to keep your eyes open for Sitka blacktail deer, land otters, salmon and bald eagles.
While the river valley offers prime bear-viewing, sightings are not guaranteed but there will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs during the course of the tour.
Minimum age is 8. Please dress warmly and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour covers approximately 800 yards of walking over uneven terrain. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. This tour is only available to Grand Princess passengers on voyage A317 (arriving July 3, 2013).
