Tour Overview
Your tour begins as you travel along picturesque Skyline Drive, witnessing vistas of Magens Bay and Charlotte Amalie, the Caribbean Sea, and the British Virgin Islands, en route. Your first stop is Drake's Seat, the lookout point at the top of one of St. Thomas' many hills, where you'll snap a photo or two, before continuing to Blackbeard's Castle and the Kongens (King's) Quarter, the former center of Danish colonial enterprise and the heart of the historic shopping district. Upon arriving at Kongens Quarter, as known as "The Williamsburg of the Caribbean," you'll see several National Landmark Properties and historical manor houses set on approximately five acres of grounds dating as far back as the late 1600's.
You'll hear the island's legacy of pirates and slavery, as you visit Blackbeard's Castle (originally a 17th century Danish military tower) and former manor houses Villa Notman, Britannia House, Crown House (once used by visiting Danish Royalty) and Haagensen House, all listed in the National Register of Historic Places. History comes alive as you view the world's largest collection of life-sized pirate sculptures, crafted in copper and bronze, the world's most extensive collection of authentic hand-made West Indian Mahogany furniture. You'll also visit the 18th century McDougal Estate, home of the Pissaro Museum, located next to the Rum Vault, where you'll sample some of the finest rum.
Next you'll pass by lush tropical gardens, terraces and fountains, and the 99 Steps, one of St. Thomas' most famous landmarks, built in the 1700s to make climbing Government Hill a bit easier. Before embarking on a downtown shopping adventure, you'll visit the spectacular Caribbean World Amber Waterfall that cascades two stories down and is comprised of over 12,000 stones of amber. After a short walk downhill, you'll arrive at Main Street, where you're free to browse and shop at your leisure. When you are finished with your free time of shopping, head back to the ship via your pre-arranged return transportation.
