The Japan Inland Sea, or Seto Inland Sea as it is more commonly known, is a spectacular scenic cruising destination that stretches 300 miles from Osaka to Beppu. Look at any map of Japan and you can easily locate the sea nestled between three of Japan’s largest islands in the south. Amid phenomenal scenery that includes rural fishing villages and breathtaking volcanic islands, you may have the good fortune of spotting some of Japan’s underwater residents, such as horseshoe crabs, finless porpoises and the elusive great white shark. Perhaps one of the most famous landmarks to sail past is the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which appears to float in the water, just off the island for which it is named. Dating back to the 16th century, this red Shinto shrine was originally built some 400 years earlier to honor the three daughters of the deity of the seas and storms.
