Your half-day excursion begins at the pier where you'll board your air-conditioned motorcoach and ascend Mt. Rotui to Belvedere Lookout. The summit of Mt. Rotui affords panoramas of Moorea's mountains, as well as Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay.
Make a brief stop at an ancient stone temple or "marae." The structures have lasted for centuries due to its construction made of stones that are so well stacked in a manner that fits without use of any form of adhesive. Continue on to Kia Ora lookout. Be sure to bring your camera to capture more sensational island and lagoon views. Travel a scenic route through a landscape of lush coffee plantation and pineapple fields. You'll stop briefly at a local pineapple plantation in Paopao Valley to capture views of the peak of Bali Hai used in the classic musical hit "South Pacific."
Then, it's on to Papetoai where you'll visit the island's oldest church. The Protestant church was constructed in 1822. Its octagonal shape is unique, built using the original stones of a Tahitian marae or open-air temple that originally occupied the site. This is the oldest European structure still in use in the South Pacific.
Return via a scenic route along the other side of the island, passing through Haapiti, Moorea's commercial center, and Afareaitu, the largest village on the island. You'll have time for shopping at one of the local pearl stores before heading back to the pier and your cruise ship.
