A three-hour motorcoach ride to the Waitomo Caves is a wonderful opportunity to take in all of Auckland's spectacular natural scenery. After driving through the thriving downtown area, you'll find yourself following the Waikato River into the rural countryside, where the lush green fields are populated by grazing sheep and cattle. Pass Ngaruawahia, home of the Maori King, and Taupiri, known for a mountain sacred to the Maori people.
Your first stop is the Waitomo Glow-worm Caves, a true geological phenomenon of nature. Unique to New Zealand, these tiny creatures radiate a fluorescent blue-green glow that illuminates the caves and underground streams the glow-worms call home. The largest chamber of the cave is known as the "Cathedral," an acoustically perfect auditorium that has hosted a number of renowned performing artists drawn to the area for the purity of sound it produces. As you embark on a short cruise in an open boat through the limestone formations, your guide will share information, legends, and facts about this fascinating and beautiful oddity of nature.
When you have completed your Glowworm Cave visit, take a 30-minute scenic drive to Crosshills Farm. A home-cooked lunch, accompanied by the splendid local wine, is served at Debbie and Fraser Robertson's home, where the lovely English garden setting and the warm New Zealand hospitality match the delicious food.
At the completion of your tour, enjoy a relaxing motorcoach ride back to port.
The Glow Worm Grotto is neither wheelchair accessible nor suitable for the claustrophobic. Guests must negotiate approximately 100 easy-paced steps to enter the grotto and approximately 50 steps to exit the grotto. The interior paths are paved.
Bring comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket as it is cool underground.
All photography in the caves is strictly forbidden. This includes non-flash photography and video.
The drive to the Waitomo Glow Worm Grotto is approximately three hours each way.
For Dawn Princess' calls to Auckland on voyage D401 (31 December 2013), D403 (19 January 2014) and D406 (27 February 2014), this tour will not stop at Crosshills due to the ship's early sailing time. Lunch will instead be provided at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Restaurant & Cafe.
For voyage D403 the walk from the cruise terminal to motorcoaches will be approximately 300 yards each way due to a sporting event. The walk will include a bridge with stairs crossing the road.
