Tour Overview

What you will visit:

Sderskr
This tiny island, one of the outer Porvoo Islands, lies a mere 15 nautical miles from the bustling Finnish capital of Helsinki but feels like a world away. Sderskr and the surrounding islands are part of a conservation area for millions of breeding sea ducks, shore birds, gulls and terns. For decades, this part of the Gulf of Finland was only occasionally visited by fishermen and birdwatchers, and many islands remained the preserve of the military and coast guard services.

Sderskr Lighthouse
This stunning, six-story, hexagonal monolith was designed in the neo-Gothic style by architect Ernst Lohman and erected in 1862. A climb to the top of the stone-and-brick tower offers spectacular views of the rocky island and the sea. A nationally important cultural setting, the 150-year-old lighthouse and the nearby lighthouse-keepers' and pilots' homes are undergoing a careful restoration. The latter have been used by ornithologists as an outpost in their studies of the many migrating and breeding birds in the area.

Rock Church
Temppeliaukio, or Rock Church, has a history as rocky as its name. The site was chosen for the church in 1906, but the final design was not approved until 1961, following three rounds of architectural contests. The public originally rejected the audacious plans, which pictured the church carved into the solid rock bed and covered by a copper-lined dome, but after the building was opened in 1969, it became a popular tourist attraction and is considered the most important architectural sight in Helsinki. Inside the church, rough rock lines the walls with an Ice Age crevice serving as the altarpiece.

What you will see along the way:

Helsinki:
A motorcoach drive through this remarkable capital reveals a broad spectrum of stunning architecture, from the golden onion domes that top the mighty red-brick edifice of Uspenski Cathedral - the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe - to the soaring white walls of the 1,300-seat Opera House to the smooth asymmetry of Alvar Aalto's architectural masterpiece, Finlandia Hall. In the center of the city lies the colorful Market Square.

Photo opportunity:

Senate Square / Lutheran Cathedral
Four stunning examples of neoclassical architecture grace this remarkable square. Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852, these four pillars include the Government Palace, a University of Helsinki building, the National Library and Helsinki Cathedral. The Lutheran cathedral's central dome soars 80 meters (262 feet) above sea level, and this glorious landmark, one of the most famous and photographed buildings in the land, is considered to be the symbol of Helsinki.

Snack/ Lunch:
Typical Finnish refreshments are provided on board the boat on the way to Sderskr, and the return cruise features a salmon soup lunch with archipelago bread, coffee & tea.
