Departing your ship, you'll head to Market Square, to board the ferry taking you to the historical Suomenlinna Fortress, the "Gibraltar of the North" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Once you arrive, your knowledgeable guide will lead you on a walking tour through the grounds of this mighty fortress, the largest fortification in Finland. Built by the Swedes to protect Helsinki from Russian attack in the 18th century, the massive complex covers six islands and is a self-contained city within Helsinki. The walls of the fortress can be seen all over Suomenlinna, and there are about 900 permanent inhabitants on the islands, with 350 people work there all year round. It's one of the features that make Suomenlinna unique: the fortress is not simply a museum, but a living community. You'll stop at a local café to enjoy some refreshments, along with views of the Gulf of Finland.
After your tour, you'll have free time to explore the area further. Discover the surrounding parks, graceful buildings and beaches, and, of course, find the perfect souvenirs before heading back across the harbor and returning to your ship.
