Your excursion begins at the pier where you'll board your motorcoach and travel through Funchal to the island's southeast coast. Enjoy photo stops at each of the following sights:
At Machico, this once sleepy fishing village is now a lively holiday resort. Legend claims the first settlers on the island landed here in the 15th century.
Next stop is Eagle's Eye. This massive rock formation towers some 1,800 feet above the small village of Porto da Cruz. From here, you'll pass the trout hatchery. Madeira's trout hatchery boasts lovely, manicured grounds.
Continue past Machico en route to Porto da Cruz where you can take in the dramatic views of the sea and the island's mountain interior. Next, head inland passing Faial to Ribeiro Frio. Your route climbs through lush woodlands to Poiso Pass. The pass rises 4,308 feet above sea level and offers views of the island's highest peaks, Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro. Then you'll descend to Terreiro da Luta, once the terminus of the old funicular railway. Finally, drive through the charming village of Monte en route to Funchal where you'll be taken back to your ship.
