    Tour Overview

Your half-day tour begins as you board your motorcoach and drive into the island interior to the craft village of Sesela. En route, you'll be captivated by the cultivated lowlands dotted with rice terraces and fruit, nut and spice plantations.

Upon arriving in Sesela, you'll quickly understand why the village is renowned for its ketak and cukli carvings. Ketak, a native shrub, was once used primarily for elegant household wares including rice baskets and fish traps; ornamental cukli carvings consist of pieces of pearl shell affixed to the ketak wood. You'll be awestruck as the artisans carve masks and other decorative wall hangings, calligraphy, frames, lattice, animals, trees or storage boxes. You'll even try your hand at traditional ketak woodcarving and carve your very own island keepsake.

Your next stop is Banyumulek, a local village renowned for its earthenware. Tour the local village on a 'Cidomo' - a traditional horse cart that the locals still use as transport - and witness the skilled villagers process clay into beautiful export quality pottery. The village pottery, produced from local red clay, has long been esteemed by connoisseurs for its color, elegant shapes and embossed decoration. You'll observe the potting practice, and get your hands dirty working the local clay using traditional techniques and natural, local materials. Before you board your motorcoach for your drive back to the pier, you'll have time to browse and take home a piece of Banyumulek pottery or two.
