Your excursion begins at the pier where you'll board your motorcoach for the short transfer to Funchal's cable car. Board a modern cable car for the approximately 15-minute ascent from Funchal to the village of Monte. The cable car follows the route of the island's old 'rack and pinion' railroad.
In Monte, you'll tour Our Lady of Monte Church. The tiny statue above the altar was discovered by a shepherdess in the 15th century and became the patron saint of Madeira. The church also contains the tomb of Emperor Charles I, the last Hapsburg Monarch, who died here in exile in 1922.
While in Monte you'll get a chance to experience the much talked about snowless sled ride. This tradition has been around since the early 19th century. Your sled is a wicker basket chair set on runners. Two local guides dressed in traditional white flannels and straw boaters run alongside your sled and guide it down the slope with ropes. It's an experience quite unlike any other.
Rejoin your motorcoach after the sled ride for the short transfer to the Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of Funchal. The Botanical Gardens were founded in 1960, and it is noted for the wide-ranging collection of indigenous and rare plants, from native island species to rainforest specimens and cacti. You'll have an opportunity to visit the gift shop before returning to your ship.
